Kommentar/Beschreibung

For students as well as for advanced researchers, academic writing is the most important way to communicate knowledge. This seminar is designed to provide students with the tools to write effectively and skillfully and to express their ideas and research in scholarly texts like term papers or Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. The class is designed as a two-part block seminar. Each seminar will focus on specific aspects of the writing process; therefore they can be attended independently.
The first part of the seminar discusses the initial stages of the research process: We will begin by investigating how to find a topic for a paper or thesis. Next, we will consider the research process and how to find appropriate primary and secondary literature and material. For a successful paper, it is important to decide upon a research interest and to formulate arguments and thesis. The seminar will provide tools to test these arguments and will introduce means to employ academic style and form.
The second part of the seminar will focus on the structure of academic texts. The class will examine how to write an introduction and a conclusion as well as zoom in on the structure of individual paragraphs. Additionally we will focus on references to primary and secondary literature in academic texts. We will discuss when and how to use quotes and paraphrases as well as how to avoid plagiarism. The seminar will close on an investigation of proof reading techniques.
