Kommentar/Beschreibung

Christian art has been known to exist in India since the 7th century. Indian artists had an immense fascination for Christian themes, especially for the figures of Jesus and Mary. Surprisingly, the most challenging works with Christian themes were done by Muslim and Hindu artists.
The main source for this class is the book "Intercultural Dialogue in Art and Religion", written by Gudrun Löwner and published in New Delhi 2018.
By analysing Christian themes in Indian Art, Gudrun Löwner provides insights into the intercultural and interreligious diversity of India. The collection of essays covers a wide range of case studies: Mother Teresa depicted by a Muslim artist, the Samaritan Woman at the Well painted by Dalits, churches built by Thomas Christians, protest art made by marginalized groups, Christmas cards created by a catholic nun. There is a lot to discover for all those who are interested in the correlations between theology, art and religious dialogue.
