The university or college experience on the North American continent differs in certain respects from that in Europe. There are also many differences between higher education in Canada and the United States and the individual institutions. Prospective students can choose between public and private institutions, from two-year colleges to ivy league institutions, and even from a number of minority-serving institutions or specialized institutions such as Aboriginal colleges, historically Black colleges and universities, women’s colleges and military colleges.
In this course, students will be given ample opportunity to improve their oral skills as we explore university and college education and undergraduate culture in both the United States and Canada. We will discuss, debate as well as critically examine topics such as student campus life, intercollegiate athletics, the role of specialized and minority-serving institutions, tuition fees and financing options, student health issues, and bizarre frosh week rituals.
"Spoken English: Higher Education in North America" forms one half of the compulsory module ang311: Integrated Language Skills. The module is assessed via a portfolio. The assessment requirement for this Spoken English course is a 15-20 minute oral language test at the end of the semester, with the grade to be added to the result from Written English for the module total.
