The course provides a broad introduction to IT security, covering the following topics: basic terms, concepts, and principles in IT security, key cryptographic building blocks (encryption, signatures, ...), system security, access control, authentication, key exchange protocols, network security, anonymous communication (mixnets, TOR, ...), and basics of privacy protection.

The 3 EC course comes with 3 exercises on the themes "Security Concepts and Cryptography", "Access Control, Authentication, and Key Exchange", and "Network Security and Anonymity". The exercises (with solutions) will be discussed in 3 plenary exercise sessions. Participation in the exercises is not mandatory but strongly recommended so that students can prepare for the exam at the end of the course.

Assessment/examination:
Assessment is based for 100% on a final exam (either written or oral; depending on number of participants)
