Comment/Description

On 5 November 2024, the people of the United States will be electing their 47th president. So far, the election campaigns have been highly spectacular media events in which entertainment und the arts play a key role. In fact, from Kamala Harris's use of Beyoncé's "Freedom" to Tim Walz wearing a Bruce Springsteen T-Shirt to the Donald Trump campaigns appropriation of "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters -- the promotion of all major politicians involved in the campaign heavily draws on music and musical icons. In addition, protest movements that do not necessarily endorse a particular party also use music in creative ways. In this seminar, we will closely examine the use of music and sound at the 2024 election. In order to do so we will be reading academic (including from political science, musicology, and communication and media studies) as well as journalistic analyses. By focusing on the 2024 US election, the course aims to provide a better understanding of the role of music and sound in contemporary politics.
