Learning organisation Nonlinear optical phenomena nowadays play a key role in both optical science and engineering. These nonlinear phenomena and their physical origin will be discussed, e.g.:
1. Nonlinear light-matter interaction
2. Frequency doubling
3. Three-wave mixinig
4. Parametric amplification
5. Third-order processes
6. Multi-photon processes

Comment/Description

The aim of this lecture is to give students a broad overview in the rich field of nonlinear optical phenomena. The students will learn how electromagnetic waves nonlinearly interact with matter and how – depending on the light intensity – light at new frequencies can be generated due to nonlinear effects. Basic nonlinear effects in all kinds of nonlinear media, e.g. gases, liquids or solids will be discussed. The students will acquire an understanding that nonlinear effects are ubiquitous in the laser community nowadays, both in science and in technology
