Comment/Description

Dear all,

The universities of Oldenburg and Bremen have the extraordinary opportunity of competing for the title “Exzellenzuniversität” in the Excellence Strategy of the German Government. As part of this competition, the two universities have drafted and submitted a joint written proposal for their planned consortium in November 2025, an expansion of the already existing “Northwest Alliance” in which the University of Groningen also plays a central role.

As an essential part of the decision-making process, a group of international experts together with members of the German Science and Humanities Council ("Wissenschaftsrat") will come to Bremen for an on-site evaluation of our joint application. The international experts would like to speak with various groups of the university. The university management, researchers of all levels, and students will present the proposal, planned measures, the existing facilities, and the support services, and hopefully convince the evaluators.

For this, we believe you would be an excellent representation of the early and mid-career researchers of our universities and the university alliance of Bremen and Oldenburg. We believe this would also be an extraordinary opportunity to gain insight and experience, and we would very much appreciate your contribution and support in the preparation of this on-site visit.

We would, of course, take the time to prepare and rehearse so that you feel well prepared. We will conduct most of the rehearsals in Bremen, the location of the actual on-site evaluation to familiarise ourselves with it.

In the following please find the dates that are currently planned:

  • First and second preparatory meeting (please choose which one suits you better; attendance is only
necessary at one of them): 10.02.2026, 2 - 4 pm, online or 17.02.2026, 3:30 - 5:30 pm, online [link
for both: https://uni-bremen.zoom-x.de/j/65322011913?wd=sqDzbXbUrccaLuxaCE9u0YaFcq5Onu.1]
  • Third preparatory meeting / first on-site tour: 20.02.2026 (full day; agenda will follow), in Bremen
  • Intensive Rehearsal Agenda Item 8 (E/MCRs and students): 27.02.2026, 10 am – 3 pm, in Bremen
  • First full rehearsal (participation essential): 13. & 14.03.2026, in Bremen
  • Dress rehearsal (participation essential): 21. & 22.04.2026, in Bremen
  • On-site visit (participation essential): 27. - 29.04.2026, in Bremen

We very much appreciate your support and contribution. Thank you very much in advance.

Best wishes,

Dr. Mandy Boehnke (UB Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity) and

Prof. Katharina Al-Shamery (UOL Vice President for Academic Career Paths, Equal Opportunities and International Affairs)
