Comment/Description

Die Geschichte populärer Musikformen ist seit der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Euro-pa und den USA eng mit der Geschichte sub- und jugendkultureller Phänomene verbunden. Früher wie heute spielen dabei in ganz besonderem Maße auch medienkulturelle Praktiken eine Rolle.

Die kulturellen Verhaltensmuster von „Halbstarken“, Mods, Rockern und Hippies, Punks, Ravern oder HipHop Crews bilde(te)n dabei ein vielgestaltiges Reservoir von Symbolen, Verhaltensmus-tern und Attitüden, als deren Klammer populäre Musik fungiert.
Heutzutage lassen sich klare Zuordnungen von musikalischen Genres und kulturellen Identifika-tionsangeboten angesichts eines veränderten Medienverhaltens kaum noch ausmachen. Umso mehr fallen Jugendkulturen ins Gewicht, die sich an einzelnen Stars (Taylor Swift) oder Medien-phänomenen (Tiktok) orientieren.

Das Seminar wird an Fallbeispielen die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Jugendkulturen und der Bedeutung ihrer Musik untersuchen sowie ihre mediale bzw. kommerzielle Verwertung thema-tisieren. Dabei werden grundlegende Positionen der Cultural Studies, der Jugend- und Szenefor-schung sowie aktueller pop- und medienkultureller Diskurse aufgegriffen und daraufhin befragt, inwiefern sie zum Verständnis von populärer Musik in der jüngeren Geschichte und Gegenwart beitragen.
