Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course aims at exploring possibilities to implement two major trends within frameworks of second and foreign language teaching, which are constantly increasing in both importance and relevance, into classroom practice: (1) the trend to initiate and foster receptive and productive pragmatic abilities helping learners to become communicatively and interculturally competent L2 speakers; (2) and the trend to shift from a teacher-centered classroom setting to a learner-centered approach acknowledging heterogeneity and allowing for as well as encouraging self-organized learning.

We will discuss ways to utilize research in cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics for input generation, pragmatic content analysis, task and activity design, lesson plan design, and learning material modification; as well as ways to structure pragmatic instruction and the assessment of pragmatic competence. Dovetailed to this objective of successfully teaching pragmatics we will look at possibilities to design learner-centered activities and assessment tools in order to meet the different needs of heterogeneous or mixed-ability learner groups.

Key Words: pragmatics, interlanguage, speech act theory, politeness, mixed-ability learning, differentiation, pragmatic instruction, learner centricity
