Course of study name: Master's Programme Microbiology (Master)
Duration: 4 Semester
Academic degree: Master of Science
Language: English
Type of admission:
  • Application/enrolment possible in the winter semester
  • Application/enrolment possible in the summer semester

Orientation and goals

The Master’s programme Microbiology is taught in English language.
Aim of the study programme is the training of qualified scientists in different disciplines and methods of modern microbiology and the fields of application. The study programme is research-oriented. In this programme, students should be trained to acquire new scientific findings together independently and in cooperation with others and to recognize its significance for society and professional practice. The qualification is based on a balanced mix of theory and practice; the specializations contain important components of the necessary knowledge and skills for a successful career in the various fields of modern microbiology.

Course structure and content

In the first two semesters, the programme offers parallel core modules (24 credit points), enhanced practically oriented modules (24 credit points) as well as profile enhancing electives (12 credit points). In the third semester, students work on two research projects, which can also be carried out during a stay abroad. The elective is continued. The final master's thesis (30 credit points) demonstrates the capacity to work independently and scientifically on a distinct topic.

Teaching and learning

Large modules with lectures, seminars, practice sessions, and a large practical component. Some modules are offered in English. Students are integrated into research activities from the beginning on.

Reasons for studying

This two year programme introduces up to date research and practice in the area of marine and environmental microbiology in English. Studying microbiology at the University of Oldenburg means:
  • close proximity to current marine research programmes,
  • xceptional opportunities for analytics, modelling, and molecular biology,
  • study in a well supervised international group,
  • undertaking small research projects,
  • cooperation with research institutes in the region of Oldenburg, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, and Groningen,
  • access to doctoral programmes around the world,
  • good opportunities for PhDs in the ICBM and in nearby research institutes.
