  • as a Minor (30 ECTS) combined with a Major

Orientation and goals

Chemistry is an interdisciplinary field based on underlying concepts, theories and models that contribute to a rational-critical view of the world. Chemistry is required for the production and application of a great variety of materials in industry, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and in the private household sphere. For this reason, chemistry is essential for our society and the common good.
Chemistry is also an essential field in the public school system because of its significance for culture and society, as well as its contribution to promoting creativity and problem solving skills. The ability to draw upon and communicate knowledge of chemistry to a wider public is highly sought after in a variety of career areas, including scientific centres, newspaper editing, associations, and in all those places where modern scientific knowledge needs to be conveyed to a wider audience.
If you enjoy communicating and explaining the ideas, phenomena, knowledge and models that make up chemistry, and if you want to work with ans inspire young people with chemistry, then you should study Chemistry at the University of Oldenburg! A strong academic background in chemistry, mathematics, German, and English (equivalent to years 12 and 13 in the Gymnasium) would be of great advantage for the successful and timely completion of this programme.

Language skills

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

The proof of language proficiency must be presented for the enrolment. For other proof possiblities see: Language requirements

Careers and areas of work

The successful completion of this dual-subject bachelor's degree programme qualifies graduates for a number of career fields that require knowledge of chemistry as well as interdisciplinary skills in the natural sciences. These include for example positions as science editors for newspapers and publishers, overseeing the training of chemistry laboratory technicians, in science centres, and in adult education. An additional qualification in a second subject in the natural sciences (30/90 or 90/30 credit points) might be very advantageous for graduates who do not intend to qualify as schoolteachers.
A completed bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for beginning a master's programme in education that qualifies graduates to teach in the Gymnasium, vocational schools, and for special needs teaching (120 credit points, 4 semesters, degree title - Master of Education), as well as for the Grundschule, Hauptschule, and Realschule (60 credit points, 2 semesters, degree title - Master of Education). Entry to the teaching field generally requires qualifications in two taught subjects.
