Course of study name: Dual-Subject Bachelor's Programme Philosophy / Values and Norms (Bachelor)
Duration: 6 Semester
Academic degree: Bachelor of Arts
Language: German
Type of admission: Application/enrolment possible in the winter semester

Description

Within the scope of the Dual-subject Bachelor, you can take Philosophy
  • as a primary or secondary dual subject (60 ECTS) or
  • as a Minor (30 ECTS) combined with a Major
Philosophy can be studied either in connection with a non-teaching career goal or as a professional teaching qualification. If you want to become a teacher, you must follow the combinations of subjects for each teaching position.

Orientation and goals

This programme in Philosophy at the University of Oldenburg is focused on teaching the basics of western philosophy from the classical period to the present, enabling self-reflection and scientific argumentation, promoting cross-sectional thinking across different disciplines, serving ethical orientation and motivating students to consider future issues for humanity as a whole, drawing on a specialised and highly developed culture of expertise. Values and norms is a school subject with a future. A rational understanding of concepts such as freedom, responsibility, the individual, rights and duties in this society and in other cultures requires practical philosophy and ethics, which are ever more urgent in a globalised world.

Language skills

Students should be proficient in English (and possibly French), and those who specialise in classical or medieval philosophy should also demonstrate proficiency in Ancient Greek and Latin, or acquire these skills through language courses. Students who intend to acquire a Master of Education for teaching Philosophy in the Gymnasium must provide evidence of their skills in languages by the time they attend the final colloquium (Abschlusskolloquium) in the master's programme.

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

The proof of language proficiency must be presented for the enrolment. For other proof possiblities see: Language requirements

Application and admission

This is an open admissions degree course, and application is only possible in the winter semester.
The application deadline for the winter semester is 15 October.

If applicable, the application deadline depends on the first subject, if it is admission restricted.

Careers and areas of work

Professional life is marked by the enormous increase in the value of personal and interdisciplinary skills. The demands of modern working life can only be adequately fulfilled within a broader framework of individual academic qualifications that consider not only the mastery of technical skills, but also self-reflection and personal development. For this reason, a combination of philosophy with another subject and suitable supplementary professionalisation modules is ideal.

If students are interested in a non-school-related goal, more information can be found at the professional field of Philosophy (in German).
