Orientation and goals

English Studies (like the earlier 'English Philology') at the University of Oldenburg is focused on the research and teaching of the English language, Anglophone literature and society and culture in various English-speaking countries, as well as teaching these subjects in schools and other institutions. More than half of the seminars and lectures are taught in English.
In the bachelor's programme, students learn the basic issues, methods and theories of English Studies. The goal of this programme is to help students gain linguistic and cultural competencies through the acquisition of technical and language skills that can be utilised or conveyed relevant professional situations.

Language skills

Students who intend to acquire a Master of Education for teaching in the Hauptschule or Realschule, in the Gymnasium or for special needs education must provide evidence of their skills in another foreign language by the time they attend the final colloquium (Abschlusskolloquium) in the master's programme.
This can be documented for example through the higher education entrance qualification (allgemeine Hochschulreife).

Careers and areas of work

After successfully completing six semesters, students are awarded a bachelor's degree, which is a suitable qualification for a number of career fields. However, students also have the opportunity to continue studying at the master's level; a master's degree is a prerequisite for embarking on a PhD programme, and it additionally opens up further career options.
Depending on a graduate's subject combination and academic degree, a number of career options present themselves. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) opens the door to a career in public schools. A master's degree in a single subject (M.A.) qualifies graduates to work in publishing, journalism (radio, TV, newspapers, public relations work in businesses and administrations), in institutions offering non-school or vocational training or further education, and libraries, as well as teaching and research.
