Module contents

This module gives an overview of the institutional characteristics of vocational and further education in Germany and in other selected countries. It offers a theoretical and empirical framework for the analytical examination of the world of work and vocational training. The module includes two courses of lectures and explorative work in institutions of vocational education and training.

The course of lecture “Work and occupation” introduces into the basics of organisational and work sociology, qualification needs of work places and their change (keywords: digitalization and sustainability). Thereby central concepts such as the occupational principle, quality assurance of training and socialisation in work processes are discussed.

The course of lecture “Systems of vocational education” provides knowledge on history, functions and structures of different systems of vocational and further education. The special focus lays thereby on the German vocational education system. In addition, the course of lectures introduces into education policy and policy consulting, current reform processes in this educational sector, and into the specific support of students with special needs and of high-flyer students (keywords: inclusion and integration). Furthermore, themes such as regionalisation, internationalisation and Europeanization are discussed.
