Skills to be acquired in this module | After completing the module, students are able to plan and conduct all or several phases of a small-scale research project. In particular, students develop a research question, devise an appropriate theoretical framework and design an empirical strategy for their project. By focusing on a topic of their own choice, students develop a deep understandig of the development of a research design and the application of theory and methods. |
Module contents | First students identify a research topic. Engaging with the relevant existing literature, students learn to define a concrete empirical analytical research question and to develop an appropriate theoretical framework for their question. Then students develop an empirical strategy to investigate their problem. They generate original data or gather existing data and analyse their empirical materials. In some cases, it may also be possible to write a purely theoretical piece. Finally, students present their findings in a written report. The accompanying classes (project coaching and research colloquia) will instruct and support the students during the process of defining a topic, deriving a research question, conducting the empirical work and completing the writing process. |
