Prerequisites
Skills to be acquired in this module

The module introduces the students into the use of geographic information systems for the analysis of spatially relevant issues and questions. Participants will learn how to handle vector and raster data, attribute tables (selection, manipulation, field calculations), how to create vector and raster data, how to digitize geometries and how to use essential geoprocessing tools (buffer, intersection, erase, ...) and how to perform raster calculations for analysis. The students are enabled to use the tools based on previously considered workflows. In addition, an understanding of how to deal with coordinate systems and projections will be conveyed, as well as an introduction into cartography and the layout of printable maps with QGIS using symbology tools.

Module contents

The course begins with theoretical basics of spatial data (vector and raster) and their characteristics and fields of application. This is followed by a practical introduction into the user interfaces of the GIS software QGIS 3.x and its components and mapping tools. A variety of GIS tools are used based on theoretical questions. The content of the GIS for WCM I course is essentially based on working with vector data.

The second course of the module, GIS for WCM II, focuses on the production and processing of raster data. Digital elevation models and land use data, also in combination with vector data, are calculated and reclassified using raster tools. Geostatistical and deterministic interpolation methods are used, based on point data from monitoring networks.
