Kompetenzziele | After completing this module, students will have an overview of common qualitative and mixed mehods data collection and analysis methods. This overview allows them to understand qualitative empirical research in social science publications, to correctly understand what conclusions can be drawn from these studies, and to understand their limitations. Students will also learn and practice the tools to conduct and analyse their own qualitative or mixed methods research projects. This inolves knowledge about the comparative advantages and disadvantage of different methods and the ability to choose the appropriate method for a research project. Upon successful completion of this module, students will also have the computer skills necessary to assist qualitative research projects. |
Modulinhalte | After briefly reviewing the science theoretical foundations of qualitative social research, also vis-à-vis quantitative social research, we will cover an overview of different data collection (e.g. various forms of open interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic methods) and data analysis techniques commonly applied in qualitative social reseach. We will also learn about ways qualitative and quantitative methods can be usefully combined in so-called mixed-methods research designs. In the module, we will also teach software tools that can assist in the process of conducting qualitative research (e.g. MaxQDA or Atlas.ti). The approach of the class is hands-on. That is, besides seminar sessions that are devoted to teaching the covered material, other sessions are devoted to practicing data collection or analysis tasks (e.g. interpretation of text material) in class. |
