Teilnahmevoraussetzungen

Recommended previous knowledge/skills: Basics of Neurosensory Science and Behavioural Biology

Kompetenzziele

This course encompasses the following goals.
+++ Knowledge in auditory neuroscience
++ Knowledge in neuroscientific methods
++ Skills in navigating scientific literature
++ Skills in presenting scientific literature
+ Social interactions in scientific context
++ Scientific writing / scientific English
+ Research norms and ethics

Upon successful completion of this course, students

-  will have sound knowledge on auditory processing at several levels, spanning from the periphery (ear/cochlea) to the central brain (brainstem/midbrain/cortex), which underlie the auditory perception, cognition, and behavior in animals and humans

- will have basic methodological knowledges used in neurosensory science

- will be able to search for, read, and report scientific literature in auditory neuroscience

- will be able to write a review on a specific topic in auditory neuroscience

- will be ready for further research in a Research Module or Master Thesis

Modulinhalte

This course comprises lectures, seminars, and essay writing in the field of auditory neuroscience. Active participation in the discussion is anticipated.

Week 1: Fundamentals of sounds. Auditory processing from the periphery to midbrain. Basic auditory functions and neuroscientific measures. Hearing loss and assistive devices.

Week 2: Functional organization of auditory cortex. Cortical processing streams. Auditory scene analysis. Attention, learning. Multisensory integration. Vocalizations and auditory communication.

Week 3: Preparation for seminars with individual advisory meetings. (Papers are assigned to each student after the information meeting in late April or early May)

Week 4: Seminar presentations of the assigned papers by the students.

Week 5: In-depth lectures on selected topics. Defining a specific subject for the essay.

Weeks 6-7: Literature research and essay writing, with individual advisory meetings.
