Prerequisites
Skills to be acquired in this module	The lecture course will introduce the module and introduce the theme of ‘cities’ in social geography. Subsequent lectures take students on a geographical tour of three world cities - Liverpool, New York and Auckland – spanning Europe, America and Oceania; in the northern and southern hemisphere. The lectures will explore these cities to introduce several major themes in social geography including 1) relations between the global and local; 2) tourism, heritage and memory, 3) sustainability and the environment.
Module contents	The seminar course supports the lecture course by enabling students to ‘travel’ to three city locations and explore, in-depth, social geographies using a range of secondary resources including audio-visual, textual media and academic and popular resources. Drawing from the three city examples, the seminar course uses a range of activities to grasp contested issues related to, for example, globalisation and colonialism, architecture and power, and environmental justice. Students will complete three timed essays during the module (in slots in the lecture course) to demonstrate their learning. The final sessions of the lecture and seminar course will reflect crossing-cutting themes across the cities examined.
