The aim of this seminar (S/Ü Introduction to the Critical and Scholarly Discussion of Literature) is to equip students with the expertise they need in order to begin to participate in the scholarly and critical discussion of literature. In the seminar, offered in nine parallel courses every winter term, students will acquire practical skills as well as historical and theoretical perspectives, and use them in critical discussion. For a more detailed outline and for information on how to gain credits, please refer to the description of the entire module.
Much of the reading and materials for the seminar will be provided in class or made available electronically (visit the wiki course page for further information). In addition you will need to purchase two books (and read them as soon as possible):
Shakespeare, William. A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ed. Sukanta Chaudhuri. The Arden Shakespeare Third Series. London et al.: Bloomsbury, 2017.
Wells, H.G. The Time Machine. Ed. Stephen Arata. New York and London: W. W. Norton, 2009.
A mandatory tutorial ("TUT Introduction to the Critical and Scholarly Discussion of Literature"; a.k.a.
"Research Methods") will also be offered in the winter term. In the tutorial, you must earn a 'pass'. Please note that some skills taught in the tutorial will also be tested in the written exam for the seminar.

There will be two meetings for each of the materials (poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel, film). One meeting will focus on additional practice of the analytical skills introduced in the seminars, the other will focus on the assignments and answer questions for those whose assignments did not meet the required standards. Under special circumstances ("Härtefälle"), students may also schedule individual counselling sessions. Sign up

Hinweis zur Durchführung:
Das Modul besteht aus den Teilen:
1. Seminar/Übung ('Introduction to the Critical and Scholarly Discussion of Literature', Wintersemester),
2. Vorlesung ('Introduction to Literary History and Textual Analysis', Wintersemester) und
3. Seminar/Übung ('Key Concepts in Cultural Studies', Sommersemester).
4. Vorlesung ('Historical Backgrounds and Critical Concepts', Sommersemester)
Das Portfolio im ang070 umfasst acht Teile, davon zwei benotet:
1. Zwei RPO plus (Research Paper Outline + Problem-oriented Sample Analysis) (jeweils in 'Introduction to the Critical and Scholarly Discussion of Literature' und in 'Key Concepts in Cultural Studies', je 50% der Modulnote),
Erläuterung:
- Elemente des Research Paper Outline: aussagekräftiger Titel; Zusammenfassung des Arguments in je einem Paragraphen zum Forschungsstand und zu den eigenen Thesen/dem ausgewählten Vorgehen (max. 1 Seite); Gliederung; Bibliographie nach Stilblatt mit ca. 6 einschlägigen Sekundärquellen.
- Elemente der Problem-oriented Sample Analysis (einer ausgewählten Passage): Begründung der Auswahl; formale Analyse; Diskussion (stützende und irritierende Aspekte); einschlägige Vergleichspassage.
2. Insgesamt 6 Take-home Assignments (unbenotet) als verpflichtende Vorübung zum Research Paper Outline und zur Problem-oriented Sample Analysis für alle Materialtypen.

| Kompetenzziele |
Ziele: Studierende werden darauf vorbereitet, an der kritischen und wissenschaftlichen Diskussion von Literatur und anderen kulturellen Ausdrucksformen teilzunehmen, indem sie 1. Themen und Fragestellungen einer kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Literaturwissenschaft erkennen, differenzieren und erörtern 2. das relevante Basiswissen für ein solches Verständnis erwerben und festigen 3. Wissen und Techniken anzuwenden beginnen, um literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche und -kritische Fragestellungen zu bearbeiten Kompetenzen: Um literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen zu verstehen und an der wissenschaftlichen und kritischen Diskussion von Literatur und anderen kulturellen Ausdrucksformen teilzunehmen, üben Studierende eine Reihe von Arbeitstechniken ein, darunter - Recherche von Informationen in der Bibliothek und Referenzwerken/Datenbanken - Auswahl von Informationen, Exzerpieren von Primär- und Sekundärmaterial, Verwendung von Sekundärmaterial zur Diskussion - schriftliche und mündliche Präsentation von Informationen Studierende erarbeiten kritische Fähigkeiten und Lesestrategien, indem sie - den spezifischen Charakter narrativer, dramatischer und poetischer Kommunikation in unterschiedlichen Medien erkennen und beschreiben - Bedeutung generierende Techniken der Charakterisierung, der figurativen Rede und der Performanz in unterschiedlichen Medien beschreiben - Literarische Texte und andere kulturelle Ausdruckformen in den Interaktionen lokalisieren, in denen sie produziert, rezipiert und diskutiert wurden - Kontexte identifizieren, in denen literarische Texte und andere kulturelle Ausdrucksformen heutzutage eine Rolle in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion sowie in Projekten im Rahmen einer Seminararbeit spielen könnten |
