We will decide on the focus of the colloquium only after the participants have agreed on their areas of interest. The colloquium can take a theoretical turn (syntactic models, models of acquisition) or discuss experimental methods and new findings. The basis will be an introduction into the recent research projects on language acquisition and bilingualism, their theoretical background, methodological decisions and experimental results. The new results can open new questions, existing data can be analyzed in personal research projects, experimental methods can be adapted to investigate quite different research questions. Requirements Active participation is required and will be negotiated. Reading the respective literature or preparing data for the sessions is an integral part of the course. Preparation: Reread the reader of the BM “Introduction to Linguistics and the English Language”.

3.02.419 - Ü Language Support for Thesis-Writers

There are no credit points attached to this course. Thesis writing support is open to students in the process of writing either their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. When it comes to the most challenging piece of individual work, the thesis, students often benefit from extra support. Depending on where you are in the thesis-writing process, you may choose to work on a chapter, an introduction, or a conclusion. Students are provided with materials to help them with: writing a thesis statement; paragraph writing, peer reviewing and editing. The workshops foster a supportive and collegiate learning environment and encourage students to think critically about their own work and that of their peers. One-to-one support will also be available to students enrolled on the course.
