    This second part of the Basismodul English Linguistics gives a brief introduction to English phonetics, followed by an extensive overview of linguistic meaning (Semantics, contextual meaning (Pragmatics), and social meaning & variation (Sociolinguistics). It also gives a short overview of the history of the English language (Historical Linguistics). The course will be accompanied by exercise sessions (which require active participation) and tutorials and will be complemented in winter by a course on phonology, morphology and syntax in the winter semester. Prüfungsleistung Modul
Portfolio (enthält take-home Aufgaben und 3 Tests: insgesamt 200 Punkte); die einzelnen Bestandteile verteilen sich wie folgt:
- Teil 1: 1 Take-home Aufgabenblatt (50Punkte) und ein Syntax-Test (50Punkte)
- Teil 2: 2 Tests à 60 min. (Midterm Test 30 Punkte, End-of-Term Test 70 Punkte)

Kompetenzziele
VL:
- Studierende lernen den Umgang mit den grundlegenden Gebieten der Linguistik und englischen Sprache
- Fähigkeit, Begriffe und Methoden der Linguistik und Englischen Sprache zu erkennen und zu beurteilen
- Fähigkeit, sprachliche Zusammenhänge und Eigenarten des Englischen auch aus historischer Sicht unter Einbeziehung theoretischer, sprachwissenschaftlicher Ansätze zu erkennen und einzuordnen;

Übung:
- Fähigkeit, Begriffe und Methoden der Linguistik und englischen Sprache erläutern und anwenden zu können;
- Fähigkeit, das englische Lautsystem auf phonetischer und phonologischer Ebene zu beschreiben und diese in Transkriptionen anzuwenden;
- Fähigkeit, sprachliche Zusammenhänge und Eigenarten des Englischen auch aus historischer Sicht unter Einbeziehung theoretischer, sprachwissenschaftlicher Ansätze erläutern zu können;
- Fähigkeit, wissenschaftliche Argumentationsweisen angewandt auf sprachwissenschaftliche Problemstellungen anzuwenden und diese schriftlich und mündlich angemessen auf Englisch darzustellen.
