Title Develop an algorithm to detect marine slicks from images
The ICBM working group ‘Processes and sensing of marine interfaces’ offers the possibility to do a bachelor or master thesis in image processing with application to oceanography. There is an opportunity to complete a contact internship beforehand. Together with “ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research Research Group Wind Energy Systems” we are collecting a high number of sea surface image from a wind farm. Our aim is to be able to automatically identify slicks, a sea-surface phenomenon of wave-dumping (basically when the sea looks like a mirror). We want to develop an algorithm that automatically scan the image, identify which one has a slick on it and interpreted the frequency of occurrence together with ancillary data (wind speed and direction mainly). The motivation lies in the fact that slicks modify air-sea interactions. We expect this work to be in paper-worth quality (especially for master thesis).
