Title | Develop an Algorithm to Identify Sea-Surface Phenomena from Images |
Description | The ICBM working group ‘Processes and Sensing of Marine Interfaces’ offers the opportunity to pursue your thesis or practical course in a machine learning project (remote work available). We collect numerous images of the sea surface from various coastal sites. In collaboration with the University of Hannover, we aim to identify sea-surface phenomena such as slicks or fronts automatically. Our goal is to develop an algorithm that automatically merges the images, scans them, determines which ones exhibit surface phenomena, predicts when they will appear, and interprets the frequency of occurrence alongside ancillary data (wind speed and direction, air and water temperature, and salinity). We anticipate this work will be worthy of publication quality, particularly for a master's thesis. You should possess: • Enthusiasm for computational work. • A strong interest in multidisciplinary research. • Proficient English language skills. • Programming knowledge (preferably Python). We provide: • Expertise in sea-surface characteristics. • Data processing and machine learning knowledge. • A pleasant working environment in an interdisciplinary and international team.
