The concept of social-ecological resilience has become a highly relevant concept in both sustainability science and policy. It is concerned with the analysis of social-ecological systems (SES) and their capacities to deal with change and disturbances. The resilience approach views humans as part of the so-called biosphere: Human activities are influencing the capacity of nature to generate key ecosystem services, on which human well-being depends. It further assumes that the resulting intertwined SES behave as complex adaptive systems, which have the capacity to self-organize, adapt and transform in the face of disturbance and change. The purpose of this seminar is to give students an in-depth overview on the concept of social-ecological resilience and the current state of scientific debate. To achieve this, (i) the theoretical foundations of this research field will be addressed (historical context, resilience thinking, theory of SES) and (ii) the seven core ‘resilience principles‘ will be jointly processed, discussed and applied. These principles describe essential elements that are important for building resilience in SES and that can inform the practical governance and management of SES at local, regional and global scales. Alongside a theoretical reflection, the seven resilience principles will be applied to analyze the resilience of different types of social-ecological systems (e.g., agricultural system, forest system, coastal fishery, irrigation system, deep-sea bed, nature reserve, …). Finally, trade-offs and synergies between the seven resilience principles will be identified and discussed. In this way the practical relevance, potential and limitations of the approach of social-ecological resilience will be illustrated in a vivid manner.
