wcm160 - Nature Conservation in Practice

After completing the module, students acquired general and intermediate knowledge of central practices and instruments of nature conservation in Germany and Europe, especially the implementation of protected areas (Biospere reseve, National Parks etc.) and means of conservation and landuse as well as possibilities of synergies with integrated nature conservation, regional development and sustainable tourism. Furthermore, the module aims to teach basic knowledge of bioptope connectivity and its application inside and outside of protected areas.

a) "Protected areas and regional development" seminar: an overview of the main types of protected areas in Europe and current concepts for the integration of protection purposes with the tasks of regional development, especially in peripheral rural areas
b) Seminar "Practices of ecological planning": presentation of relevant instruments of spatial and regional planning, which are obliged to the special demands of an ecological planning; in-depth consideration based on practical examples - this event takes place in the winter semester.
c) Habitat connectivity: Biotope network and habitat networking theory, including causes and effects of fragmentation and isolation of semi-natural habitats, investigation of migration and propagation behavior of selected species of dragonfly in trench systems
d) Excursion "Area Protection": Presentation of a German or European large protected area with special consideration of geographical, floristic, faunistic, nature conservation, historical and agricultural as well as landscape and economic aspects
