Beschreibung: ‘The horse raced past the barn fell.’ Ungrammatical? Difficult? Now why is that? Or take the German sentence ‘Der Bauer, den die Ärztinnen grüßen, lächelt’ or even worse ‚Die Bäuerinnen, die die Ärztin grüßt, lächeln.` who is greeting whom here? Or take the Dutch sentence ‚Wie kuste het meisje?‘ (who is kissing the girl/ who is the girl kissing): is the girl kissing or being kissed? Complex sentences, ambiguous sentences. This is what we will deal with in this course. How do we process them, how do we understand them, and how do languages differ in this respect. Of course we will also talk about simple unambiguous sentences, after all, we need to understand the difference. We will start with some classic studies/ papers (Frazier, Gibson), on sentence processing to get some background on the research field and an overview of the most important research questions. After that we will discuss cross-linguistic research, and/or neurolinguistic aspects of sentence processing. Goal of this class is to (a) get an overview on theories on sentence processing (b) stimulate critical reflection of these theories and (c) stimulate developing research questions and research plans independently, which (d) are worked out under supervision in a small research project, which can be done individually or in pairs. Students are expected to participate actively, to give short presentations on papers, and one somewhat longer presentation on their own research project, which will result in a paper. The class will be in English. Students from Niederlandistik write their paper in Dutch about a) a Dutch phenomenon, b) a crosslinguistic study comparing Dutch with one other language c) Dutch as a foreign language. The literature will be in English.
