This course gives students the opportunity to work slowly through Milton’s great poem, attending first and foremost to its formal and linguistic properties as well to its magnificent thinking on poetic inspiration, human freedom, the intricacies of social and family bonds, the forms of the divine, and the relationship between humankind and the rest of Creation. Further subjects of interest will include the circumstances of the poem’s composition and its historical background.
