| Beschreibung: | Canadian society is constantly evolving as it has one of the highest per capita immigration rates in the world. Rather than encouraging its newcomers to assimilate into mainstream culture, it strives to integrate them into its ‘cultural mosaic’. In fact, Canada is one of the few countries in the world to have adopted multiculturalism as an official policy, which aims to promote cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity and is founded on the principle that all Canadians are equal and can take pride in their ancestry. Nevertheless, there are many critics of Canada’s concept of multiculturalism who argue that it works better in theory than in practice. In this course, students will explore the cultural diversity of Canadian society and critically examine the political ideology of multiculturalism in Canada. --- This course forms one half of the compulsory module ang311: Integrated Language Skills. The module is assessed via a portfolio. The assessment requirement for this Spoken English course is a 15-20 minute oral language test at the end of the semester, with the grade to be added to the result from Written English. In-class presentations will count towards active participation and will provide students with valuable language feedback. |
