Beschreibung: What’s wrong with the following sentences? • I am living in Oldenburg. • He didn’t answer my letter yet. • You can’t discriminate people. • I have a possibility to study abroad. • He needs a new equipment for his experiment. • I have to learn for a test. If you’re not sure of the answers, or don’t know how to explain them, then this is the course for you! Grammar is often relegated to a minor role in a communicative language classroom, yet inaccurate use of grammar can often be an enormous barrier to communication. This course looks at grammar in terms of *meaning*, as well as *form*, and looks at the reasons for different tenses and aspects, not just how to construct them. Equally, teaching vocabulary should not just be about the teacher as a walking dictionary. Vocabulary is an essential part of communication, but people are often anxious about teaching it explicitly. What is important? Which words belong together? How often do students need to see a word before they remember it, or use it? How can I structure a vocabulary lesson? This course will help potential teachers find answers to these questions that work for them and has several aims: 1) To revise grammar and vocabulary at an advanced level, in order to give students more confidence when using English in the classroom later on. 2) To analyse items of grammar and vocabulary which are often problematic for German learners of English, and to discuss ways of tackling them. 3) To introduce students to various strategies, techniques and resources for teaching grammar and vocabulary in a classroom situation and to develop resources for classroom use. 4) To provide both practice at and feedback on vocabulary and grammar teaching/explanation. This course will be assessed via a portfolio comprising several small teaching activities/explanations, lesson plan/s and grammar and vocabulary tasks. Students will have a choice of items. Active participation during the course - including regular attendance and cooperation during the teaching activities - is also crucial. Readings and teaching resources will be available from Stud.IP at the beginning of the semester. Note: For students studying MEd (Gym) and MA (English Studies), this course forms half of the compulsory module ang900: Language Skills for Proficiency, and is graded. For students studying MEd (WiPäd), or MEd (G/H/R), the course is part of ang701/2 and is assessed on a pass-fail basis.
