| Beschreibung: | The course "Spoken English: Sport and Society" forms one half of the compulsory module ang311. The module is assessed via a portfolio. The assessment requirement for this Spoken English course is a 15-20 minute oral language test at the end of the semester, with the grade to be added to the result from Written English. In-class presentations will count towards active participation and will provide students with valuable language feedback. Watching sport is incredibly popular, but few people consider what a significant role it plays in society. This is particularly obvious in a year like 2014, when both the Winter Olympics and the World Football Championships took place. The course will examine major moments in sporting history, as well as analyze the way sport is portrayed in the media, popular fiction and film. We will read a number of short extracts covering various sports and genres, and discuss what makes sporting events so memorable. Class activities will include group work and mini-presentations on both major sporting issues and films about sport with extensive language feedback. We will also practice a large number of technical and idiomatic expressions connected to sport. Materials and media will be available via Stud.IP at the beginning of semester. |
