Kommentar/Beschreibung

This is a special master course, taught by international faculty, invited and coordinated by the Institute for English and American Studies at Osnabrueck University and the University of Oldenburg.

In this course, internationally acclaimed U.S.-American folk musicians Sarah Lee Guthrie, granddaughter of folk legend Woody Guthrie, and Johnny Irion, great nephew of writer John Steinbeck, will shed light on the history and development of American folk music. They will share their expertise and experience as musicians to describe and discuss the aesthetics as well as the political potential of folk and to introduce you to the art of song writing.

(There is a lot of material and information about Sarah and Johnny on the internet - a small, intriguing item can be found here http://lamammals.blogspot.de/2014/01/sarah-lee-guthrie-and-johnny-irion.html, but there is a lot more!)

This course is offered and taught in collaboration with the American Studies program at the University of Osnabrück. It consists of six seminar sessions and two concert sessions. Students at both universities are required to attend half of the sessions at the other university. In order to acquire credits for the class, you need to attend all sessions and the concerts and write a final paper (15-20 pages).

Please note: This course is open to master students (Fachmaster "English Studies") only. The number of participants is limited to 10 students from each university. If you have any question, please contact the course coordinators at UOS and UOL, respectively.
