| Beschreibung: | The American South commonly invokes such past images as the Civil War; idyllic plantations on the one hand and the horrors of slavery on the other; settings of small towns that are as quaint as they are grotesque; individuals that are as well-mannered as they are violent; and a society that is ridden by racial conflict and religious fanaticism. In this course, we will approach the complexities and ambivalences of the physical and psychological landscape of the South through the historical fiction of white and black women writers since 1960. Focusing on the nexus of gender, race, and class we will explore the tensions between art and history, past and present, in historical fiction ranging from Margaret Walker’s neo-slave narrative Jubilee (1966) to Harper Lee’s Southern Gothic To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) to the more recent controversial bestseller The Help (2009). Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in class discussions, preparation of the weekly materials. |
