Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course, specifically designed to assist students with the writing of their master theses, provides a thorough introduction to the main features of Academic Writing, including the required structure of a thesis text, range and register of language, the appropriate use of verbs, objectivity, hedging, punctuation, and, last but not least, correct citation. It also offers reflections on the writing process as well as an introduction to revision strategies, focussing on both editing and proofreading.

Normally taught as a one-day workshop followed by two 60-minute appointments of personal writing support, the Academic Writing course, unfortunately, because of the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions placed on classroom teaching, still has to be taught in adjusted format this semester:

Instead of the one-day workshop (8 x 45 minutes), participants will be provided with four worksheets by e-mail, each consisting of explanations and exercises and taking approximately 90 minutes to complete. These are to be returned to the course instructor and corrections and comments will be provided, again all by e-mail. All the materials taught in the standard workshop will be covered in the online workshop.

The dates for the receipt and return of the worksheets are as follows:

Worksheet 1: Monday, 01.02.2021 to be returned by Friday, 05.02.2021 [feedback on 15.02.2021]
Worksheet 2: Monday, 15.02.2021 to be returned by Friday, 19.02.2021 [feedback on 01.03.2021]
Worksheet 3: Monday, 01.03.2021 to be returned by Friday, 05.03.2021 [feedback on 15.03.2021]
Worksheet 4: Monday, 15.03.2021 to be returned by Friday, 19.03.2021 [feedback on 29.03.2021]

These dates are fixed, and worksheets returned late will not be corrected / commented on.

The online workshop will then be followed by personal writing support, provided again by e-mail, whereby active/regular participation in the workshop is a prerequisite to qualify for personal writing support. The first set of personal writing support appointments will be available on Friday, 16.04.2021 and the second set on 30.04.2021; details are to follow. Should any student urgently require personal writing support earlier, because of submission of his/her master thesis before the end of the winter semester on 31.03.2021, all efforts will be made by the instructor to exceptionally make such appointments available.

Because of the adjusted format, no more than 6 students can participate in this course, with preference being given to students planning to submit their master thesis shortly. Also, a sound knowledge of English grammar is required.
To apply / register, please

[1] sign up on Stud.IP AND
[2] send an e-mail to Dr Uta Protz, the course instructor, at uta.protz@eui.eu, (a) attaching one page of English text written recently, ideally taken from your master thesis, and (b) stating when you plan to submit.

Once you have been provisionally accepted onto the course, you will be sent a short needs analysis test on 18.01.2021. This allows you to voice requests and enables the course instructor to tailor the workshop as closely to the needs and interests of the participants as possible. The needs analysis test must be completed and returned by 25.01.2021, otherwise your place will be allocated to the next person on the waiting list.

In advance, thank you for your cooperation in making this e-course work & I look forward to “meeting” you shortly,

Uta Protz
