Beschreibung: EMMIR workshop open to students from other MA courses Carried out by EMMIR workshop open to students from other MA courses (US based Cuban Artist) Wednesday, 29 October, 14-18h Friday, 31 October, 14-18h Saturday, 1 November, 9-18h in A1-0-005 Outline: The workshop will be centered on Arte Útil which in Spanish roughly translates as useful or benefitial art, but also suggests art as a device or tool. Arte Útil is an artistic practice that imagines, creates and implements socially beneficial outcomes. This year-long investigation initiated by the artist Tania Bruguera includes an online archive, an association of Arte Útil practitioners, an open-call, a publication, a working laboratory at the Queens Museum, an artist residency at Immigrant Movement International and a series of public projects and debates culminating in the transformation of a building at the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands into the Museum of Arte Útil in the fall of 2013. More info at: http://arteutil.net/ Bio: Tania Bruguera is a leading political and performance artist researching ways in which Art applies to everyday political life by transforming social affect into political effectiveness. Her long-term projects have been intensive interventions on the institutional structure of collective memory, education and politics. To define her practice she uses the terms arte de conducta (Conduct/Behavior Art), Arte Útil (Useful Art), political-timing specific and and aest-ethics. Called a catalyst, Bruguera is highly regarded by artists, academics and political activists. Her art project of an art school for performance and political art in Havana inspired other similar institutions in Latin America. Bruguera was invited as an expert for a preliminary document on cultural rights to be presented by UNSR to the HRC in 2013; she participated in the initial meetings for Occupy Wall Street and a TED Talks Global speaker in 2013. She is currently working on the political representation of migrants through her project Immigrant Movement International.
