| Beschreibung: | Overseas Indians, estimated at over 25 million persons are spread across 130 countries and constitute the second largest diaspora in the world today. According to the Ministry of Overseas Indians, there are 2.42 million Indians in Africa; people of Indian origin (PIO) and non- resident Indians (NRI). This course i.e. will study the various facets of the Indian communities in the countries of East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and South Africa. The Indian communities on the African continent are the result of waves of migration in the past millennium, including the import of indentured laborers to work in the sugar cane plantations of the British colonies of Mauritius and South Africa, the contract laborers to build the Uganda-Kenya Railways of the then British Protectorate of East Africa (B.P.E.A), as well as migration for trade and commerce. We will study these multilayered communities – their social, economic and cultural aspects from a gendered perspective and locate them within their historical as well as a contemporary context. The course instructor will draw on a variety of research methodologies, including biographies family portraits, photography, films and oral narratives.
