Beschreibung: ‘Ethnomusicology’, ‘Cultural Musicology’, ‘New/Critical Musicology’, ‘Cultural Turn’ – these terms stand for different ideas of (historic) musicological thinking. At the same time, regarding some key aspects their purposes to change focus head in the same direction. Starting in the 1980s, different Anglophone musicologists started lively debates which have influenced our thinking about culture and music today. It is the purpose of this seminar to understand the historic scientific impact and relevance of positions put forward by musicologists such as Joseph Kerman, Kofi Agawu, Kwabena Nketia, Marcia Citron, Susan McClary, Lawrence Kramer, Tia DeNora and Nicholas Cook mostly in the 1980s and 1990s. During the semester, these texts are to be read (at home) and discussed (in class) in the original English. Hence, the seminar will be conducted exclusively in English. This is meant to serve the additional aim of practicing musicologist’s “business English” and thereby meet professional requirements needed for instance at international conferences and research programs. All language levels are encouraged to participate. The extra work necessary due to the “language barrier” will be sensibly accounted for.
