Changes to examination regulations

Ensuring the quality in study programmes and teaching is a key objective of the University of Oldenburg. Our degree programmes are therefore inspected and reviewed on a regular basis.

Due to constantly changing requirements the content of the courses needs to be revised and adjusted from time to time, with the result that the examination regulations may change for a student during the course of their studies. Changes to examination regulations are always made in a process in which you as a student participate via your representative bodies (the Study Commission, the Faculty Council and the Senate).

What happens when examination regulations change?

  • The University is obliged to take the protection of legitimate expectation of its students into account, making transitional regulations necessary.
  • The aim is to ensure that the alterations to the examination regulations do not prolong the duration of studies.
  • Newly enrolled students use the new examination regulations and students who are already enrolled use the transitional regulations.

Examples of transitional regulations

  • “For students who are in their second semester or higher at the time of the entry into force of the new regulations, the regulations that applied up to that point continue to apply. Students can also apply to have the new regulations apply for them, subject to the approval of the Examination Board.”
  • “If module aaa000 has not been completed by the end of the summer semester 2025, students in the second semester or higher must complete module bbb111. Failed attempts in module aaa000 will be taken into account.”

If you have any questions or uncertainties regarding this topic, please contact the Examinations Office. The Examinations Office team will help you with questions such as:

  • Which examination regulation applies to me?
  • Is there a transitional regulation for my degree programme?
  • How are possible changes going to affect me?
