This seminar will combine the field of intercultural communication with the linguistic branch of pragmatics, in which language is seen as the performance of some kind of action and linguistic choices are investigated in relation to their sociocultural context. We will discuss the most relevant theories and methodologies in cultural anthropology and cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics (e.g. Speech Act Theory, Politeness theories, Conversation and Discourse Analysis). The participants will get the chance to work on a small-scale empirical research study.
