The geographical and social expansion of English as a global lingua franca has led to the emergence of a staggering number of local and national varieties of English thoughout the world. This seminar will examine the historical, social and structural aspects of a wide spectrum of varieties of English in Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific region (including pidgins and creoles). One selected variety will be the focus of the second half of the seminar.
