Orientation and goals

The Master's programme in Museum and Exhibition is both theory-oriented and application-focused, preparing students for museum-related activities. The curriculum includes an individual focus on the disciplines of Material Culture, History, or Art, as well as comprehensive transdisciplinary approaches. In addition, studentsc can expand their practical skills through collaboration on exhibition projects. For this purpose, the programme cooperates with a large number of museums in the region.

This course of studies lasts 4 semesters.
You will complete 120 credit points in the following areas:

Teaching and learning

Introductory block seminar, seminars with tutorials, lectures, 35-40 weekly accompanying practical days in a cooperating museum, colloquia, workshops, practice sessions, excursions, project work, practical training, graduate conference.

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in a field relating to History, Culture, Art or Media Studies, including e.g. Material Culture, Archaeology, (European) Ethnology/Cultural Anthropology, and Gender Studies or in a closely related field worth at least 60 credit points.
  • In case of a degree in the field of humanities, social or in rare cases natural science professional qualification can be approved in individual cases. Prerequisite in these cases is sufficient museum und exhibition and relevant content can be proved.
  • Evidence of relevant professional experience or internships

Careers and areas of work

This master's programme prepares students for a wide array of museum and exhibition related scientific or scholarly careers. These include, in addition to the usual activities of museums, further areas such as museum management and exhibition review. Students in this programme gain valuable knowledge in the form of methodology and analytical skills, as well as historical, theoretical, and practical skills that can be very useful for a later career (depending on choice of subject and specialisation) in a research institution, in education, or in the media sector. Finally, this course of studies can also serve as an excellent basis for a museum-related doctorate or an academic traineeship.
