Orientation and goals

The course programme Material Culture: Textiles is related to cultural studies. It examines every day things, their appearance, workmanship, and composition, their history, current uses and diverse meanings from a variety of perspectives. This programme in Oldenburg is distinguished by its use of approaches from ethnology, cultural anthropology, and cultural representation through artistic-scientific as well as scientific-technical approaches. The goal is to learn to analyse, represent, and participate in the cultural rules and dynamics of modern societies through their material culture. One of the programme's focal points is textiles, especially clothing, in a broad context including material culture, body, media, design, and sustainability. The curriculum is designed to allow students to choose their own modules freely after the first year, making a number of individual specialisations possible.

Major thematic areas include:

Careers and areas of work

The goal of this bachelor's programme is to qualify graduates to work in areas relating to cultural studies. Opportunities depend a great deal on the specific subject combinations that students choose, as well as their choice of internships and voluntary placements, but this degree is nonetheless an important qualification for work in the cultural field, in museums, in culture and fashion journalism, in the arts and media, in culture management, consumer advice, NGOs, and in education (outside of a school context).

The Bachelor’s degree forms a basis for the consecutive, interdisciplinary Master's programmes of EMMIR (European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations), "Cultural Analysis" (with practical research elements) or "Museum and Exhibition" (with elements relating to practical museum work).

This bachelor's programme Material Culture: Textiles can also lead to a teaching career. It can be connected to a Master of Education in the school subject 'Designing Textiles'. This is offered with qualification options for the Grundschule, Hauptschule, Realschule, and for Special Needs Education (Sonderpädagogik), and it qualifies graduates for the Referendariat.

If students are interested in a non-school-related goal, more information can be found at the professional field of Cultural Studies (in German).
