Orientation and goals

The master's programme in German Studies (M.A.) offers you the opportunity to set your own individual emphasis in the field of German language and literature studies. Furthermore, you can pursue a specific course profile in Low German or in the area of Children's and Youth Literature. Depending on how you structure your studies, your degree will prepare you for a further academic career or provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in other areas in the realm of cultural activities.

Course structure and content

This course of studies lasts 4 semesters. Part time study is possible.
You will complete 120 credit points in the following areas:
  • Linguistics (areas: grammar theory, pragmatics, Low German, German as a second language)
  • Literature studies (areas: literature history, literature studies in cultural contexts and/or literature and media)
  • Interdisciplinary module in languages and cultural studies
  • Professionalisation area (languages, offers in other subjects, internships, projects, study abroad, etc.)
  • master's thesis module

Language skills

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need high knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 3)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 5 in all four areas)

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in German Studies or in a closely related field worth at least 60 credit points.

Application and admission

This is an open admissions degree course, and applications are accepted for both the winter and summer semesters.
The application deadline for the winter semester is 30 September.
The application deadline for the summer semester is 31 March.

For open-admission Master's degree programmes it is strongly recommended to submit their applications as early as possible before 15 July for the winter semester and before 15 January for the summer semester. If the supporting documents are submitted after these dates but before the standard application deadlines, this may have disadvantages for the start of your studies. Careers and areas of work

Graduates find employment in a variety of fields, including journalism, print media, audio-visual and new media, libraries, publishing, public relations, and adult education. The master's programme in German Studies also qualifies graduates to continue on to doctoral studies, and accordingly into an academic career.
