Ethnologische Museen erleben seit einigen Jahren große Veränderungen.
Aufgrund politischer Debatten (zu Postkolonialität, Migration, Diversität, Restitutionsforderungen etc.) gibt es neue Ansprüche an ihre Sammlungen und Ausstellungen.
Etliche ethnologische Museen reagieren darauf mit neuen Konzepten des (Ent-)Sammelns, (Co-)Kuratierens und Ausstellens - sowohl in Dauer- als auch in Sonderausstellungen.
Manche Museen sind neu gegründet worden (z. B. Quai Branly in Paris), haben neue Bauten und Konzeptionen erhalten (Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Köln, Humboldt-Forum in Berlin) oder haben ihre Geschichte aufgearbeitet (Spurensuche im Überseemuseum in Bremen). Für die Restitution der Benin-Bronzen sind neue Gremien gebildet worden und Sonderausstellungen konzipiert worden (z. B. im MARKK in Hamburg). Die Zusammenarbeit mit den Source-Communities und migrantischen Diaspora-Communities ist verstärkt worden. Zudem werden Themen wie (Anti-)Rassismus, Gender und Queer aufgegriffen.
Das Seminar richtet sich an BA- und MA-Studierende, die sich mit diesen Themen beschäftigen wollen. Hierzu werden Grundlagen zu Themen wie Museum, Ausstellungsanalyse, Ethnologie und Postkolonialität genauso erarbeitet wie konkrete Fallbeispiele anhand der Selbstdarstellung der Museen und Forschungsliteratur. Die Veranstaltung ist mit der Exkursion 3.08.133 verknüpft, die ggf. nach Bremen, Hamburg und Köln führen wird.
